Before you send money, check for these warning signs
Urgency, unexpected changes and requests for security codes are reasons to pause. Learn what to verify before sending money.
Pressure to act quickly is a reason to stop
A message demanding immediate payment, threatening to block an account or promising to resolve an emergency may be trying to make you act without checking. A familiar name, photo or logo does not confirm who sent it.
If someone asks you to transfer money, pause. Verify the request through a different channel, using a number you already have saved or official contact details you have found independently.
Confirm any change in bank details
For example, you receive an email from a supplier announcing new bank details and asking you to pay today. Before changing the beneficiary, call your usual contact to confirm both the change and the full account details.
Replying to the same email is not an independent check: the account could be compromised. Also check that the amount, currency and purpose of the payment match what you agreed. If anything does not match, clarify it before proceeding.
Protect your credentials and act promptly
Do not share passwords, PINs or authorization codes with anyone who contacts you. Open your usual banking app or type the bank’s official web address instead of following an unexpected link.
If you have already shared information or sent money and suspect fraud, contact your financial institution immediately through its official channels. Keep messages and payment receipts to support your report. Reporting promptly may help the institution address the case, but it does not guarantee you will recover your money.
